Will LU ever feel like "home"?
This is a difficult question.
So many factors come into the equation.
Think about the lifestyle that you want while you are at university.
Feeling "at home" in a place often means having friends to share the experience with.
The comments from forestry students reflect this theme very strongly.
One way to develop friendships is to live with people - the other is to work with them.
Both opportunities are present when you go away to university.
For example, LU has a residence policy which favours first year students.
This means that you will have a very good chance of getting into residence if you apply.
Residence has many advantages - it is close to classes and most of the social events.
Being on an all you-can-eat food plan means you won't starve and, better still, you won't spend precious time shopping, cooking and cleaning up after meals!
More time to study or ......join the Woodsman's Team (ladies wanted too!!).
Being in residence means getting to know more people - close-up and personal.
LU's campus has a lot to offer - the library, the fieldhouse with a beautiful pool, weight room, gym and squash courts,
'The Outpost' - hub of most social activity and home of great bands!
What about hobbies?
If you ski - cross country or downhill - Thunder Bay is paradise!
If you just enjoy walking along a river, we've got that too!
The bush surrounds the city so we don't have to go far to hike, paddle or hunt.
You can even fish for trout and salmon in between classes.
For those who enjoy classical music or Broadway productions, there is a great auditorium close to campus.
City buses run regularly and can take you to several shopping, entertainment and recreational areas.
What about class size and program reputation?
In first year, your largest classes will be in service courses (biology and statistics) from other departments.
Otherwise, in most cases, your class size will be 40 students or less.
Lab groups are usually half of this number.
Much of our work is done in even smaller groups.
As for program identity, Lakehead Forestry has always been a leader on campus - we were one of the first programs to be offered more than 50 years ago.
Employers and educators recognize the value and spirit of our graduates.
Employers come from across Canada to actively recruit students for summer and permanent employment.
Your best bet, if you possibly can, is to come to Lakehead to see for yourself.
Do it during March break or later on, in the summer.
If you like the idea of a place that's big enough to offer variety and small enough to offer friendship;
old enough to know what it's doing and young enough to have fun;
wild enough that you can see the "bush" right out your window and civilized enough that people appreciate the view, then maybe you - like many others - could call LU "home"!
......oh, did we mention that we sometimes have to shovel snow???
