Ghana Environmental Literacy Program
CIDA-Funded tier 2 program (1992 - 1997)
Goals:
- To establish a core group of university educators in environmental management and literacy
- To assist in organizing and implementing a continuing education, advanced forestry program for practising foresters
- To train community leaders
- To provide the technical support and facilities to sustain delivery of community-based environmental management and literacy
Objectives:
- Strengthen existing Ghanaian programs through education and training in the context of environment and resource management, and adult literacy
- Develop and implement resource management and adult education action plans at the local, community-based level
- Develop and implement in-service training programs involving relevant government agencies, regional education institutions and environment NGOs
- Develop for the three-most Northerly regions of Ghana programs to assist government policy and decision-making concerning environment management, resource conservation, and adult literacy
Program Activities to meet the objectives:
- Community-based adult literacy utilizing four local dialects in the development of training materials
- Four pilot project areas for community-based demonstration forests
- Establishment and operation of a GIS and Remote Sensing training centre in Ghana
- A community-based land use planning process
